Jeremiah Love sets a new Fighting Irish record against Stanford



No. 9 Notre Dame closed out the regular season with a big 49-20 win against Stanford on Saturday night for the program’s 10th straight win. The highlight of the night came from star Fighting Irish running back Jeremy Love, who set a new school record for touchdowns in a single season.

Entering the game tied with Jerome Bettis at 20 touchdowns, Love scored on Notre Dame’s opening drive, hitting a two-yard run, to overtake Betis and stands alone in the books of Notre Dame. With 18 rushing touchdowns this season, he also tied Audik Estim’s single-season record.

The Heisman Trophy candidate finished with 66 total yards, 8 of which came after returning from injury held in the first quarter. In 12 games this season, he has rushed for 1,652 total yards, including 1,372 rushing yards on 199 carries, averaging 6.9 yards per attempt.

Backups Jadarian Price and Aneias Williams stepped up while Love was out, combining for 178 total yards and four touchdowns. Price scored on a short pass from backup quarterback CJ Carr to make it 14-0, while Williams added a 48-yard touchdown drive. Later in the game, Williams finished with 51 yards while the starters were rested.

Carr threw for 205 yards and two touchdowns, including a 45-yarder for Price’s score. The Fighting Irish offense set the tone, scoring on its first four possessions to take a 28-3 halftime lead. The team pulled off a rare fake punt trick, with defensive end Joshua Burnham throwing an 84-yard touchdown to Luke Talic.

Stanford managed 204 passes from Elijah Brown and a touchdown, along with two field goals from Emmett Kenny. The Cardinal added another touchdown in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 49-20, but the game was long decided by Notre Dame’s explosive start.
