Jock Landale is taking full advantage of his experience in Memphis
« Opportunity is the key to everything. » Jock Landale well understood. After spending his first four seasons between the Spurs, Suns and Rockets, the center has benefited from a much wider shooting range since his time with the Grizzlies.
« Coach Tuomas Iisalo gave me that, and I really appreciate the opportunity to play with guys like Santiago Aldama. Just having a coach that has a certain amount of confidence in me, that allows me to go out on the field, make mistakes, learn from them and continue to improve at 30 years old, that’s something quite unique in my situation here », delivered the interior to Hoopshipe a few days ago.
Cut by the Rockets last summer before arriving at Tennessee, the interior quickly gained the trust of his coach. It should be noted that in this sense he was “helped” by frequent visits to the clinic of the usual holder of the office, Zak Edi.
The latter, against the Magic in London yesterdayit wasn’t there. But Iisalo preferred to rely on Jaren Jackson Jr.’s racket. – Santi Aldama in his top five. Sub Jock Landale continued to post nearly a point per minute with 21 units (9/11 on shots including 1/2 from distance), 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks in 23 minutes.
“Free agent” next summer
Coming off the bench doesn’t seem to bother him much, as he’s a bit more productive than when he’s a starter. Overall, with his 11 points and 6 rebounds average, the Australian signed his best season of his career, which is also associated with more playing time.
« I’ve always had confidence in my ability to have this kind of impact, whether coming off the bench or even at times as a starter this year. The only question was whether I would get this opportunity; maybe i’m starting to lose a little hope because of that. So at 30 years old, to be able to do that and make an impact and have probably the best year of my career is really invigorating. I always knew I could do it if given the chance “, he says.
The question is also financial for him. Paid $2.4 million this season, he will be a free agent next summer. By proving so productive, the interior, who would logically want to continue his experience with the Grizzlies, puts the odds in his favor to land a nice new contract.
« It will be decided in a few months. I guess there’s a part of this that I can’t control. So I try not to think too much about it and just let things flow, regardless of the outcome. So I have to continue to keep my cool, focus on each game one after the other and we’ll see where we are in 50 games », term-t-il.
