Joe Lacob’s statement ‘it just didn’t work’ breaks silence on Jonathan Cummings trade

With The Golden State Warriors trade Jonathan Cummings to the Atlanta Hawks at the trade deadline, there’s no denying what an upward trajectory it has been for the player and the franchise. As fans expected the Warriors to trade Cummings, the owner Joe Lacob he would break his silence to discuss the deal.

In the trade, Golden State also traded Buddy Hield and received Kristaps Porzingis in return, marking a major trade for the team and hopefully boosting their playoff push. Lacob would talk about the Cummings experiment because his perspective is interesting since he was known as a big advocate for the young player, saying that “it’s not hard” to agree to a deal with the 23-year-old.

“Everybody’s assuming a lot about it,” Lacob said, according to The San Francisco Standard. “Look, I liked him as a player, I liked him as a person. … And he showed a lot of potential for us at times. He just never quite worked. And he got hurt at a bad time.”

“I think we all knew we had to do something. But we didn’t want to give him away either,” Kuminga continued. “Because he’s a talent, and a lot of people think that too. It just worked out – we got something we thought was worth doing. Otherwise we would have kept him.”

While it is The Warriors were in talks with Giannis Antetokounmpo also, the Kuming and Porzingis trades were their main deal at the deadline. Kuminga was with Golden State for five seasons, while Lacob talked about how the relationship “didn’t work out.”

“I liked him. I like all of our players. Otherwise we wouldn’t have acquired them if we didn’t like them all. But you know, it just didn’t work. It looked like it was going to work. It was full on and on and on,” Lacob said.

The Warriors are looking to improve as they are 29-27, which puts them in eighth place in the West heading into their next game on Sunday against the Denver Nuggets.
