Joe Mazzula reveals the secret to Jaylen Brown’s December success

Entering the 2025-26 season. Jailen Brown must have been licking his chops looking to get his first opportunity in the first option. The Boston Celtics they wanted to move on after losing Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford in one offseason, not to mention having to fill the scoring and playmaking void that Jayson Tatum’s Achilles tear would create, but Brown made sure Boston remained the top team in the East regardless.

On Friday night, the Celtics scored 140 points in a 140-122 victory over the Indiana Pacers as Brown continued his red-hot December. The Celtics star once again scored 30 points, marking his eighth straight game with at least 30 points. And the head coach Joe Mazzulla praised Brown he deserves for one of the most consistent scorers in today’s NBA.

“He picks and chooses his spots really well,” Macula said in his postgame presser, via Bobby Kriwicki of Sports Illustrated. “I think he finds a great balance between knowing when to score on offense versus letting guys do their thing. He spends a lot of time reading the play and executing the play.”

It’s a testament to how well the Celtics identify talent as well how well Macula positions his players to make it Boston is in third place in the East at 19-11 despite the significant roster change they underwent from last season.

Although Brown scored 30 points Friday night, four other players scored in double figures, and of those four, three topped the 20-point mark: Peyton Pritchard with 29, Sam Hauser with 23 and Derrick White with 21. Anyone on the Celtics’ roster can contribute on any given night, and it will be interesting to see how much better Tatum is when he returns.
