Joel Embiid sends a message to skeptics
If the first matches were interesting for him, at the end of October and the beginning of November, Joel Embiid was terribly clumsy these last days. To face the Pacers, the Sixers were without their best player, Tyrese Maxey. It was, therefore, a golden opportunity for the pivot to perform well.
He did much better than that, scoring 39 points on 12/23 shooting in a Philadelphia victory. This is his season high and even best since his 70-point outing against the Spurs, which dates back almost two years, on January 22, 2024.
Is this a message to the league, to say that it can still shine? “I don’t know. This is for people who think I can’t do this anymore. I can’t change their minds or their minds.”, he answers. “I feel good. Playing like this, I feel like I can still do it.”
Heatstrokes now occasional?
But does he want to, now that Tyrese Maxey has taken over the Sixers? “If somebody has to make a sacrifice, I will. But if the opportunity arises, when the machine starts working like it did in this match, I could do it. With everyone healthy, I don’t expect to do it again. But if necessary . . .”
It is not only the absence of a playmaker that can explain the strong performance of the pivot. There are also four days without playing, specifies Nick Nurse. “He worked a lot this week. Training helped him and also his individual work”says his coach.
Joel Embiid has had a very sluggish start to the season and his awakening has therefore fallen on the Pacers, which does not surprise Rick Carlisle. “He’s a great player, a proven All-Star, an Olympic team member. This is a Hall of Fame player. Who’s surprised? Not me », launches the Indiana coach, deprived of his 1000th career win.
