John Schneider’s confident message ahead of Game 3

The The Toronto Blue Jays’ momentum was derailed by the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 2 of the World Series. Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitched a complete game, and the Dodgers hit one home run after another, handing the Blue Jays a 5-1 loss to even the series.

The The Blue Jays will feel no greater sense of urgency to win, as they are three wins away from winning the franchise’s first World Series title since 1993. That means all hands are on deck, and manager John Schneider it sure works as if that’s the case. Before Game 3, Schneider acknowledged that every reliever should be available and that taking on a heavy load should be fine at this point in the season.

“I think everybody will be able to play three days in a row,” Schneider said, per MLB.com’s Arden Zwelling . “Guys who can throw more innings will be important in these next three days.”

Schneider will most value relievers who can go multiple innings, so even though Lewis Varland allowed the Dodgers to put the game firmly out of reach for the Blue Jays in the eighth inning of Game 2, it makes sense that Varland will be one of the starting pitchers calls to replace Max Schecerwho should start in Game 3.

Chris Bassitt and Eric Lauer have also shown a consistent ability to pitch multiple innings, with the former a part of the starting rotation in the past.

The Blue Jays will need to operate with a great sense of urgency with each inning or at-bat that goes by. The Dodgers leave no room for error for their opponents, and Toronto will need to push all the right buttons if they want to complete this upset against the reigning World Series champions.

Scherzer has been elite in the World Series in the past. But he is 41 years old and playing worse than ever. He started for the Blue Jays in the ALCS and allowed just two runs to the Seattle Mariners in 5.2 innings of work in Toronto’s pivotal 8-2 win in Game 4 of that series.

However, this Dodgers lineup is a different animal, so Scherzer will have his work cut out for him. The Blue Jays will hope he has one more iconic performance left as they look to take a 2-1 lead in the World Series.
