Jonas Valanciunas Nuggets contract slightly modified
Throughout the summer and while expected in Denver, the situation around Jonas Valanciunas was uncertain.
The Lithuanian wanted to continue his career in Greece, while the Nuggets wanted to make him Nikola Jokic’s replacement. Finally, everything was resolved and the beginning of the season confirms that this marriage, interesting on paper, is also very effective on parquet floors.
The former Toronto player is averaging 8.3 points and 4.6 rebounds in just 12 minutes, which allows Denver to better experience the moments when the three-time MVP has to breathe.
And behind the scenes, things are also moving. Jake Fischer announces that the franchise and the player have been able to agree to make a small modification to the contract between them. How? By moving the date that allows him to confirm his salary for the 2026/27 season to 8 July 2026, and no longer until 29 June.
Another week for Denver, two million for the player
What’s the difference? Simple: as of June 30, the market is open and the Nuggets will be able to use Jonas Valanciunas as a bargaining chip in a week, so why not move him.
In return, the Lithuanian partially guaranteed the last year of his contract (2026/27), in the amount of two million dollars. Previously, if he was terminated before June 29, he did not receive any of the remaining 10 million on his contract. From now on, after this maneuver, if he is released before July 8, he will have at least two million in his pocket.
The Nuggets thus gain flexibility once a player gains financial security. Something to please everyone. It remains to be seen if at the end of the season Jonas Valanciunas will want to finish his contract or if his desire for Europe will still be strong and he will leave the NBA after all.
