Jonathan Cumminga of the Warriors is taking a big step forward in his recovery from injury
The Golden State Warriors they ask to keep Jonathan Cumminga before the NBA trade deadlineand his recent injury information should cause some joy for the fans.
Cummings injured his ankle during the Warriors’ 121-113 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Jan. 4. What initially looked like a three-week absence could now be shortened via Athletic’s Anthony Slater.
“Note: Jonathan Kuminga left his walking boots tonight. I wore it the whole trip. He is still in the middle stages of his recovery from a significant ankle sprain, but he is making progress.”
Warriors, led Stephen Currytrying to get on the winning streak this season. At 20-20 and third in the Pacific Division, they’ll need Cummings and potentially another trade piece to do any damage in the Western Conference.

Kuminga had a remarkable campaign before the ankle injury. The fourth-year averaged a career-best 16.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists. He gradually became Curry’s “partner in crime” as they tried to scour the court for another star in a trade. His loss was felt of Golden State, i especially by head coach Steve Kerrvia ESPN’s Shams Charania and Ohm Youngmisuk.
“Brutal,” Golden State’s Kerr said of losing Kuminga. “JK plays so well and is obviously a big part of what we do. He is our more athletic shooter and finisher and plays so well.
“We feel good about our depth and our ability to handle losing him.” Kyle (Anderson), Moses (Moody) will get more opportunities.
Cummings’ next chance to return would be against the Washington Wizards on Saturday, but the Warriors are more likely to hold him out to test his ankle in practice.
