Jonathan Cumminga’s value has been hit by a harsh reality check from Brian Windhorst
No one was surprised to hear about Golden State The Warriors’ formal trade request for Jonathan Cuminga this week; most of us saw that, given that he was out of coach Steve Kerr’s rotation and had expiring contract. The 2026-27 season, worth $24.3 million, is a team option, but it won’t be easy to move amid Cummings’ low trade value, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst.
One Western Conference the team expressed great interest in acquiring Kuminga, but the reported offer did not meet the Warriors’ standardsWindhorst said on ESPN’s The Hoop Collective.
“I would just say the team that really wanted him was the Sacramento Kings. According to reports from Anthony Slater and Shams, they still want him, and the Warriors have the standard they wanted for the deal,” Windhorst said. “They wouldn’t do the deal.”
“There might be one or two other teams that have interest, but with all due respect to my former colleague here at ESPN, Scott Perry, the Kings aren’t known for being thought leaders, so what’s to say people aren’t beating down the door on this guy when he was a restricted free agent?”
With Kuminga sitting on the bench for most of the season with no indication the Warriors are close to making a deal, it’s clear his trade value isn’t that high, especially days after his formal trade request.
“There is not a lot of interest in him, because if there was, someone else would have already sold him or signed him last summer,” Windhorst added. “I say, why did this cause so much consternation. If he’s a valuable player, the Warriors who are going against him would be playing.”
For Brian Windhorst, the Warriors’ struggle to develop Cummings into an everyday player is an indication that there is more to be desired in Jonathan’s game, something most teams realize a change of scenery won’t fix. Kuminga is in his fifth season with the Warriors.
Jimmy Butler on Warriors Jonathan Cuminga trade request

A war veteran Jimmy Butler reacted to Jonathan Cumminga’s trade request after Thursday’s 126-113 win against the Knicks. Although Kuminga isn’t the right player for coach Steve Kerr, he’s a popular guy in the Warriors locker room, Butler says.
Butler approved Kuminga as an ideal teammate and the ultimate professional, said ESPN’s Anthony Slater.
“It has nothing to do with us. We love (Jonathan Cummings) in this locker room. That’s not going to change,” Butler said. “If by any chance he’s not here, we’re still playing with JK. I’m speaking for everybody. I don’t care. We love the guy. I wish him the best here. I wish him the best wherever. That doesn’t change. We don’t listen to the noise. I hope he doesn’t listen to the noise. He continues to come in with a smile, do what he’s a pro and be the best.”
The Warriors have until Feb. 5 — the NBA trade deadline — to make a move.
