Jordan Binnington on trying to steal Alex Ovechkin’s 900th puck

The St Louis Blues lost to Washington Capitals 6-1 on Wednesday, continuing their terrible season. Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin scored his 900th goal in his career, the first player to ever reach that milestone. A viral video of Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington killing the puck that Ovechkin scored has gone viral. He spoke to The Athletic’s Jeremy Rutherford about his intentions with the puck.
“Yeah, I thought … basically had an assist on the goal, turning the puck over, I didn’t think he was going to mind sharing (the puck). I had full intention of giving it back to him … yeah, full intention of giving it back,” Binnington said, according to Rutherford.
Binnington tried to play the puck behind the net, but none of his teammates were open. So, Ovechkin stole his cleanup attempt, setting up possession. Then Ovechkin picked up the rebound and fired a backhand into the open cage. During the celebration in front of the raucous Washington fans, Binnington tried to steal the puck.

The official was skating to Binnington before the next faceoff and was probably asking for the puck. He accepted and Ovechkin managed to return the puck. Binnington says fear not; however, he would get the puck back to the Capitals regardless.
The The Blues have really struggled this yearin large part because of their goalie. Binnington and Joel Hofer have a combined .850 save percentage and 3.86 goals-against average to start the year. Even with a disappointing core up front, no team could put together a playoff push with that goalie.
The Blues return to action on Thursday night when they host the Buffalo Sabres. Hofer is likely to start as he looks to turn things around. St. Louis is now well out of the playoff race and will need to start a winning streak to get into contention.
