Jordi Fernandez explains Danny Wolf’s lack of playing time during NBA call-ups
Danny Woof’s first extended minutes in the NBA will have to wait longer. The Brooklyn Nets assigned Wolff and fellow rookie Ben Saraf to their G League affiliate, the Long Island Nets, on Thursday. That move is coming after the team promoted Wolff and Saraf to Brooklyn for Tuesday’s 119-109 loss to the Toronto Raptors.
Despite that Dai’Ron Sharpe missed the game due to injury and the Nets don’t have another backup center on the roster, Wolff was benched against Toronto. Head coach Jordi Fernandes decided to play third-year forward Noah Clowney extended minutes at center with the second unit.
“Noah has experience right now. Opportunities will come up for everybody. That’s my decision. I just went with Noah because I’ve seen him multiple times. That’s pretty much it,” Fernandez said of the decision.
Asked Jordi Fernandez why he played Noah Clowney extended minutes at backup center instead of bringing in Danny Wolf:

Wolff played two lousy minutes in the loss, scoring his first NBA points on a pair of free throws.
Danny Wolf returns to the G League after failing to make the rotation during the NBA call-up

Although Brooklyn’s oldest rookie at 21, Wolff is the only Nets draft pick who has yet to play extended NBA minutes. Fernandez recently spoke about the Brooklyn Development Plan for Wolff, Saraf and Nolan Traore after the team assigned the starting trio to Long Island.
“If we get a full season with them, between playing on Long Island and the NBA, (playing) more than 60 games is a win. We believe they can compete at this (NBA) level. It’s just a process,” the coach said.
Wolff had back-to-back double-doubles in his first two G League appearances last week. He scored 25 points on 10-of-19 shooting with 13 rebounds, two assists and three turnovers in Sunday’s 112-105 loss to the Capital City Go-Go’s.
Wolff’s return to the G League could indicate that Sharpe is nearing his return from injury. The Nets listed the backup center as questionable for the Raptors game with a strained glute before ruling him out.
