Kam Spencer, the Clippers’ nightmare

cam spencerTHE Grizzlies had one of the best benches in the NBA and struck again against the Clippers. One player in particular stood out: Cam Spencer. A nightmare for Californians from the first minute to the last.

While Memphis missed the start of the match, the guard got his team back on track with seven points in the first half, but he was especially decisive in the end of the match.

If the Grizzlies extended the deficit and took a fifteen-point lead, the Clippers got back under the ten-length mark thanks to long shots Bogdan Bogdanovic etc Kobe Brown but each time Cam Spencer gave his team momentum with shots from behind the arc.

He later connected on two game-winning shots to give Memphis a twenty-point lead and definitively sink Los Angeles, finally defeated 121-103 at home. This is the Clippers’ 18th loss in 21 matches.

“The ball was moving very well in attack and I just had to shoot when I received the ball.”explains Cam Spencer simply. “As a competitor, you want to help your team as much as possible. We were able to make runs and keep the momentum, it’s a team win first and foremost.”

Cam Spencer finished the night with 27 points (a personal best) on 9/13 and 7/10 shooting from distance, but this isn’t his first hit at the Intuit Dome. In his first visit to Memphis on November 28, he was already decisive by scoring a late 3-pointer to help his team win with a short header.

An excellent shooter, but not only that

“It was huge,” congratulates Tuomas Iisalo after the victory. “If you ask Cam, he’ll be the first to tell you he likes to play second-unit guys. Jock sets great screens on him, which allows him to find his spots on the perimeter. Cam is the driving force behind our bench players.”

Cam Spencer has had a hot hand through ten games as he’s averaging 16.9 points on 64% shooting, but most notably a solid 63.6% on 3-pointers while attempting 5.5 per night.

If he has been known for his shots from behind the arc since coming to the NBA guard, he is starting to show a good sense of the pass. Over his last ten outings, he has averaged five assists per game and is averaging 3.9 this season, compared to just 1.4 his rookie season.

“He is one of our players who has expanded his offensive range this summer,” points out Tuomas Iisalo. “His value in the league is different now because he was just a scorer before and he’s become someone who can make decisions with the ball in hand.”
