Kel’el Ware downplays the distraction of being involved in trade rumors

With Miami Heat star Kel’el Ware and his playing time fan talk for what seems like the longest, there’s no denying that his name has been thrown around in trade speculation. As it is The Heat have been linked to Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpoa slew of trade scenarios included Ware, which the 22-year-old himself is aware of the rumors about.

Miami fans look forward to next Thursday’s trade deadline, in which the team is named as the one that is “tense” for the Antetokounmpo trade, according to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints. Ware’s name, along with Tyler Herrowas the subject of many false trades and rumours, with the young center admitting he’s seen it all.

“Sure, I saw it,” Ware said, according to The Miami Herald. “My people told me. But at the end of the day, if they make that decision, they make that decision. If not, then I’m just going to keep coming out here and playing regardless.”

Ware has struggled to find extended minutes amid an up-and-down second season, logging three minutes in Saturday’s loss to the Chicago Bulls, but the big man is focused on improving on the court. He would play down the speculation as a distraction.

“I don’t think it’s even a distraction,” Ware said. “Because like I said, it’s not even something you can control. I mean, well I guess you could say it goes along with controlling control. I mean, if it happens, it happens. Wherever I am, I’m going to try to play my best basketball.”

There is no denying the talent that Ware possesses, with The heat center selected for the 2026 Rising Stars game as a second-year player, representing the team along with Norman Powell, who will be a reserve for the All-Star game. Ware would say no one in the organization has spoken to him about a potential move, but trade rumors are part of the business, as he echoed the 2024 first-round pick, focusing only on what he can control.

“I feel like everybody has the same mindset about it,” Ware said. “I mean, that’s really all. Control the controls. None of us are the ones making that decision. So you’ve got to wait and see. If something happens by the deadline, it happens. If not, it’s not going to happen. We’re going to keep trying to play as a team.”

In reporting on a potential trade with the Bucks for Antetokounmpo, ESPN’s Shams Charania would say the team is looking “blue chip young talent”. The only player on the Heat that fits this is Ware, as his seven-foot frame and athleticism give him an archetype that any team can build into a productive player.

If there’s anything positive about his name in trade rumors and speculation, it’s that it shows he’s a valuable player.

“It just means I bring value and I bring a skill set,” Ware said.

Either way, it remains to be seen whether Ware will be dealt by next Thursday’s deadline or will remain in Miami as the cornerstone of their young core. So far this season, Ware is averaging 11.3 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game while shooting 53.9 percent from the field and 41.9 percent from beyond the arc.
