Kevin O’Connell takes full blame for Max Brosmer’s ugly pick-six

The Minnesota Vikings it looked like a disaster without JJ McCarthy in Week 13. Seattle lost to Minnesota 26-0 in rookie Max Brosmer’s debut as the starting quarterback. Brosmer made several rookie mistakes, including a particularly ugly interception during the second quarter.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell took full responsibility for Brosmer’s ugly pick-six against the Seahawks.

“I didn’t like the play call. It’s completely on me at that point,” O’Connell said Monday, per Alec Lewis of the Athletics.

The interception came on a key fourth-and-one from deep in Seattle territory. Minnesota could have tied the game with a field goal, but chose to go for it on fourth down and hopefully take the lead.

Brosmer got off to a good start and was immediately pressured by DeMarcus Lawrence. Novak tried to get rid of the ball, but threw it to Ernest Jones, who took it 84 yards for a touchdown.

O’Connell took responsibility for the particular play that was named. It was also a questionable decision to put a rookie quarterback in such a high-leverage situation.

Vikings fans must be hoping McCarthy will return in Week 14.

The The Vikings had one of their worst offensive performances all season against the Seahawks.

In fact, Alec Lewis noted that Minnesota’s offensive EPA per game was the second-worst performance of any team this season. The only team worse was the Raiders in their Week 7 loss to the Chiefs, who were also shut out.

Advanced analytics look bad, as do raw accounting statistics.

Sam Brosmer went 19 of 30 for 126 yards passing and four interceptions. He also suffered four sacks and was hit seven times.

Those struggles carried over to the rest of the team. Superstar receiver Justin Jefferson had two receptions for four yards, the worst game of his professional career. The running game was also largely ineffective, outside of a 24-yard run by Jordan Mason.

Minnesota clearly has a lot of work to do before the next game.

Next up for the Vikings is a Week 14 matchup against the Commanders.
