Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns on fulfilling a ‘lifelong dream’ with the DR basketball facility
New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns he uses basketball to serve the communities he feels have served him. This is the standard to which he devotes time and attention. Using his platform to advance his voice and resources, Towns is giving back to those who helped make him who he is today.
Knicks in September 2024 trade for Cities it was a homecoming for Edison from New Jersey. He played for St. Joseph High School in neighboring Metuchen. At 16, Towns started volunteers at REED Academyprogram in New Jersey that aims to help students with autism reach their potential. It was the way he gave back to the state that helped him become a five-star prospect.
Through his whole nine seasons with the Minnesota TimberwolvesTownes consistently became involved in local social justice efforts. He was an NBA finalist 2022 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Champion of Social Justice Award for his efforts after the killing of George Floyd. Two years later, he was honored for his role in passing Minnesota’s Restore the Vote Act.
The center began strengthening his bond with his mother’s home country before any of those efforts. When Towns was 15, he began representing the Dominican Republic in FIBA competition. His mother Jacqueline Cruz was born there.
Towns is open about his appreciation for the country who gave her life. He told ClutchPoints in an exclusive interview that his mother’s family is from the city of Santiago, which he “visited often when (he was) younger.”
Tamboril, Santiago is where Townes’ latest community service project is underway. In partnership with several non-profit organizations, the Dominican-American NBA All-Star builds new athletic facility for the local community. Towns began talking with Dominican President Luis Abinader and Minister of State for Sports Kelvin Cruz in January 2025. After several networking talks and workshops on ideas to promote youth sports, plans to build a new facility were finalized.
“President Abinader of the DR believes in our mission and supports what we’re doing,” Towns told ClutchPoints. “His support means a lot and shows that we are taking the right steps to make this project a huge success.”
How the Karl-Anthony Towns basketball facility will help the local community

Towns said the “facility (they’re) building nearby” is the location of those childhood visits, making things even more personal. GO Ministries, a nonprofit based in Louisville, Kentucky, is heavily involved in the business. Since 2017, they have been building a $26 million “leadership development complex” in Tamboril, located less than 10 miles from the heart of Santiago. The new basketball facility is an addition to the organization, which has many employees in DR.
Towns became a global ambassador for the non-profit World Youth Clubs at the end of 2022. GO Ministries became a member of the VIC in 2024, leading to five-time NBA All-Star participation in both groups. This participation now it stretches to their latest venture in Tamboril. The great man is convinced that GO Ministries is the right partner to help him fulfill his long-standing dream.
“I’ve always wanted to make an impact on kids in the Dominican Republic, and with GO Ministries I’m working with a real organization that has a presence in the DR and understands the needs of the community,” Towns told ClutchPoints.
The new facility will offer the Santiago community a full-size indoor basketball arena, training room, classroom and community meeting space. GO Ministries announced in a statement that they will host workshops and events that “support the holistic development of young people.”
Towns told ClutchPoints that those plans for the facility include various athletic and educational activities. The aim is to give local youth a ‘third place’ entirely designed to encourage their growth.
“Baseball, basketball, soccer, volleyball are just a few of the sports along with education and strength and conditioning classes,” Towns began. “The impact is evident in the community as the next generation receives athletic training from their mentors who see them as more than athletes. They spend hours in a positive environment and away from the distractions they face every day.”
Cities on a “mission” for Dominicans to support each other

Cities first visited the GO Ministries Leadership Development Complex in August 2024. The official announcement of the new facility came a month later. Towns has visited the court several times since then.
New York’s star big man made contributions at Tamboril beyond his own resources. His outspoken advocacy in meetings with President Abinader recently paid off in literal terms for the project. In mid-September, the organization shared that the president “generously committed himself” to that undertaking.
The announcement was the title of a post with multiple images, the first of which included both President Abinader and Towns. That included news that President Abinader’s contribution left them with everything they would need to break ground in 2025.
29-year-old Nick described various positives from the process leading up to ClutchPoint. He said the response from the local community has been incredible, adding that so far the project has been “really well received”.
Towns has made a habit of devoting time and resources to causes that benefit the communities he wants to give back to. Press releases and interviews on these topics consistently reveal that he both wants to help certain causes and inspire others to follow suit. Through GO Ministries, he invited “individuals, corporations and organizations to join him in this transformative journey.” Those contributions will go towards “construction, purchase of equipment and support of ongoing programs at the facility.”
Through representing the country in international play to help the local communities where his mother’s family hails from, Towns is making new connections with the Dominican Republic. As a result, he takes the right steps towards achieving his main goal.
“Building Karl-Anthony Towns Arena allowed me to connect with my Dominican heritage and all Dominicans,” Towns told ClutchPoints. “My commitment and mission is that Dominicans help Dominicans, and the key is that we have to lean on each other.”
