Kristaps Porzingis broke Karl-Anthony Towns’ record with 10,000.

On Thursday night, The Atlanta Hawks battled the San Antonio Spurs in a clash between two teams missing their best players, Tree Young and Victor Wembanyama. In the end, the home Spurs won 135-126, making the Hawks 9-7 on the season.

It is admirable how The hawks managed to survive even without the presence of their best ball handler and playmaker. The likes of Jaylen Johnson, Dyson Daniels and Nickil Alexander-Walker have stepped up to the challenge, shouldering the responsibility of running the offense.

But in the midst of Young’s injury, an important one A Hawks player in Kristaps Porzingis has missed some time as well as some pain in the right knee. Regardless, Porzingis was active Thursday, scoring 16 points on 7-10 shooting. And at the same time, he became the fastest 7-footer in games played to reach 10,000 points and 900 three-pointers, surpassing Karl-Anthony Towns, according to Hawks PR on X (formerly Twitter).

It took Towns 545 games to accomplish the aforementioned feat, while Porzingis only needed 511 games to do so. This isn’t a huge surprise considering the three-point shot is a bigger part of Porzingis’ shooting diet than it is for Towns, although it took Porzingis much longer than Towns to reach those numbers as he’s encountered far more injury problems throughout his career than the New York Knicks star ever did.

The Hawks fell by double digits once again much like they did in the previous two games (against the Phoenix Suns and the Detroit Pistons). As in those games, they came back again in the fourth. But like the Pistons contest, it wasn’t enough in the end, as the Spurs pulled away and ended up winning by nine, even though Nikhil Alexander-Walker ran off for 38 points on eight three-pointers.

At least the Hawks played good basketball amid Young’s injury. They will look to get back to winning ways on Saturday when they face the struggling New Orleans Pelicans.
