Kyle Shanahan on Jawan Jennings in the fight with Tre’von Moehrig after the win

The San Francisco 49ers overcame Brock Purdy’s rough start to beat the Carolina Panthers Monday Night Football in the 12th week. Purdy threw three interceptions in the first half, but San Francisco provided a big play by Christian McCaffrey and strong defense to win.

After the game, tempers flared like Jauan Jennings went after Tre’von Moehrig. The 49ers wideout swung at the Panthers safety and had to be contained by his teammates.

It didn’t take long to see why Jennings had a problem with Moehrig. Cameras caught the low blow that sparked the brawl. But just in case there was any doubt, Kyle Shanahan dealt with the incident in his presser after the game.

“The guy took a cheap shot and hit him in the balls,” Shanahan said, according to coach Yak on X. “And I was really proud of Jauan for not losing his mind and getting to the sideline.”

With the 49ers down by two, Carolina tried to come back in the fourth quarter. Brice Young threw his second interception of the game but The Panthers hit the defense forced a three-and-out, getting the ball back with less than five minutes to play.

Carolina’s drive stalled and Ryan Fitzgerald missed a 57-yard field goal. The 49ers took over and ran out the clock, closing out a 20-9 victory. But on this drive frustration boiled over and Moehrig made his cheap shot. Or, more accurately, Moehring hit Jennings in the groin.

Shanahan credited the receiver for not fighting back with the game still in the balance. But when the contest was over and the players took the court to exchange pleasantries, Jennings let Moehrig know how he felt about the low shot.

While Moehrig threw a late punch, Jennings made an early impact Monday night. Purdy found wideouts at the Panthers’ four-yard line, and Jennings made his way into the end zone, bouncing off three defenders. A 12-yard score capped a 15-play opening drive.

McCaffrey did the rest of the heavy lifting Monday night, with 31 touches for 142 yards and a touchdown. The 49ers improved to 8-4 with the win. They travel to Cleveland to face the Browns in Week 13. Now San Francisco will wait to find out if Jennings will face disciplinary action from the league after his primetime brawl.
