League takes stance on injury reporting, calls for gambling changes

With The NBA Cup is now in the rearview mirror and resuming the regular season, the league announced changes to the injury reporting process while also taking a stance on gambling. As NBA Commissioner Adam Silver shared with fines to teams for reporting injuries and a particular gamble with federal arrests earlier this season, the latest from the league is no doubt an interesting statement.
Looking at the injury reports, ClutchPoints’ own NBA Insider Brett Seigel would say the new changes are “designed to promote greater transparency and consistency in player participation reporting.” Seigel would announce “key notes” from a memo sent to the league.
“On game day, teams must submit an injury report between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. (local) that reflects each player’s current participation status,” Seigel wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “For back-to-backs, teams must report by 1:00 PM (local) on game day. All injury statuses for a player must be properly added to the league’s injury portal.”
The league is also calling on gambling companies to limit certain bets, such as props:
“The NBA is also attempting to restrict gambling companies from placing certain bets on individual players, including maximum amounts that can be wagered, player population limits and other restrictions, including eliminating certain types of bets altogether,” Seigel wrote.
One note reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania is that when it comes to reporting injuries, “teams will now have to resubmit injury lists on game day between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. local time and update public reports every 15 minutes.” In any case, it remains to be seen how the rest of the league will react to this news, and especially the gambling companies, to the NBA’s suggestions.
