Left on the bench, Nikola Vucevic remembers only the positive

Nikola Vucevicin Chicago, invincibility in the first week regular season is but a very distant memory, and billy donovan’s men traveled to charlotte last night looking to snap a seven-game losing streak. Mission accomplished with a narrow victory (129-126) won after a “challenge” was upheld after a foul originally whistled to Zach Collins. And if the former Spurs staff was on the field in “time for money”, it was because Billy Donovan opted for a strong choice: without Nikola Vucevic!

A strong decision made midway through the third quarter when the Bulls were trailing by 13 points. “I think the key for us is consistency. We had nine turnovers and nine assists in the first half.”Billy Donovan excused himself. “In the second half, we attacked the rebound. Those are the things we have to do. I thought Jaylen (Smith) and Zach (Collins) played pretty well together.”

A choice of circumstances

For his part, Nikola Vucevic absolutely did not ask to argue. It was never his style, and since the team won, he feels it was the right choice.

“Obviously, as a competitor we want to be on the field”, reminds the Montenegrin. “Zach and Jaylen played really well. They let us get back into the game, they gave us a huge boost. Billy (Donovan) decided to stay with them, and it was obviously the right decision. We won the game and I’m just happy we won. It was a tough time for us.”

And don’t worry, Nikola Vucevic is not expected to become a replacement. Billy Donovan is very clear: it’s a match scenario decision.

“I wouldn’t jump to conclusions based on just one match”concludes the coach. “What I love about Vooch is that even on the bench he encourages his teammates, talks to them. He’s incredibly positive. I’m sure he wanted to be on the pitch every minute, but I really appreciated the way he carried himself on the bench, cheering and trying to lift the morale of the team.”
