Like Chauncey Billups, Terry Rozier has pleaded not guilty

During his appearance in federal court in BrooklynTerry Rozier has decided to plead not guilty to illegal betting and money laundering charges. The Heat leader was released on $3 million bail, secured by his Florida home and other properties.
While awaiting trial, which is scheduled for September 2026 at best, Rozier is not allowed to play or have any contact with the victims, co-defendants or witnesses in the case. Rozier has also surrendered his passport and can only travel between Florida, Ohio, his home state, and New York unless pre-approved.
While Rozier declined to comment as he left court, his attorney, Jim Trusty, said his client was “excited” to begin preparing his defense. The latter announced that he will soon submit a request to dismiss the charges on constitutional grounds.
A $100,000 fake injury?
Federal Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall scheduled the next hearing for March 3 after prosecutors announced they would soon turn over a “vast” amount of evidence to defense attorneys, including an initial set of 1,000 documents and more than 55 GB of data.
In addition to Rozier, around thirty people were arrested as part of a major crackdown on illegal betting operations linked to professional sports. According to prosecutors, on March 23, 2023, for the sum of $100,000, Rozier informed the bettors that he planned to leave the game against the Pelicans early, citing an injury. This allowed bettors to bet and win tens of thousands of dollars. He was the same pattern as Jontay Porter, banned for life by the NBA.
That day, Rozier played only the first nine minutes, citing a foot problem. He did not play again all season for the Hornets.
