Luca Garza lands in concussion protocol after scary moment

The Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers renewed their bitter rivalry when they faced off at TD Garden on Wednesday to kick off their respective campaigns.

The Celtics took the first quarter28-26, before the 76ers stormed back in the second frame, 31-23, to go into the break with a six-point lead, 57-51.

A scary moment also occurred in the second quarter after Celtics forward Luca Garza was inadvertently elbowed in the head by 76ers center Adam Bona during a jump play. Garza fell to the ground and did not get up for several seconds.

According to Athletic’s Jai King, the 26-year-old striker has been set up under concussion protocol.

Garza made his Celtics debut after signing a two-year, $5.5 million deal in the offseason. He spent the last three seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he saw limited playing time. He was selected by the Detroit Pistons with the 52nd overall pick in 2021.

With Boston going through a rebuilding phaseGarza could see an increased role off the bench, especially with a thin front line.

He can definitely score the ball, as evidenced by his title as Iowa’s all-time leading scorer. He is also the only player in Hawkeyes history to be named Big Ten Player of the Year twice.

Depending on the severity of his concussion, Garza could sit for several days before being cleared to return to action as the NBA has become more strict about the process.

As of this writing, the Celtics are leading the 76ers in the third quarter.
