Major update to Mexico’s FIFA schedule amid cartel violence

After the recent death of Mexican drug lord and El Mench from Jalisco New Generation (CJNG), the country of Mexico has turned into a drug war, straight out of a movie. However, this situation caused great panic around the world, with fans worried about visiting Mexico for the upcoming World Cup in football matches. After El Mencho died during an operation to seek his arrest in the town of Tapalpa, mass violence spread different Mexican cities.

However, amid growing panic, FIFA president Gianni Infantino held a productive discussion with Mexican President Claudia Scheinbaum. Shortly afterwards, FIFA revealed on its social media that there was “full confidence” in Mexico to host all the scheduled matches.

“Earlier today I had an excellent conversation with the President of Mexico, Claudia Scheinbaum. I reiterated our full confidence in the host country and I look forward to it hosting all the scheduled matches there in what will be the most inclusive and biggest (FIFA World Cup) ever.”

The upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to begin on June 11, 2026. will be hosted by three countries: USA, Canada and Mexico. The city of Guadalajara, Mexico is currently scheduled to host four World Cup matches in June. Although there are concerns about FIFA’s Mexican schedule, the Mexican Open, an ATP event, is currently held in the North American country.
