Marcus Mariota suffered a concussion, but there’s a catch

The Washington Commanders (4-10) dig deep into their quarterback roster heading into Saturday’s matchup against the visiting Philadelphia Eagles (9-5). Marcus Mariota has been pushed to his physical limits in this division and is currently on the sidelines. The former No. 2 overall draft pick suffered a hand injury and was also evaluated for a concussion in the second half. Although he was granted permission for the latter, Josh Johnson did now below center for the commanders, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
Washington is coming off a losing campaign, but the players would certainly relish the opportunity to stun the reigning Super Bowl champions. Although, that will be extremely difficult to do with a signal caller who hasn’t thrown a pass this season entering the day. Johnson threw an interception on his first series of the game, and the Eagles scored on Saquon Barkley’s touchdown run seven plays later. Philly leads by double digits in the fourth quarter at press time.
Prior to his exit, Mariota was 7-of-14 for 95 yards with no TDs and no picks. Despite modest numbers this season, the Commanders managed to win two games with a capable bench. Aside from the incredible comeback, the Eagles will be celebrating their third NFC East title in the last four years at Northwest Stadium.
The hits keep coming for Washington and his fan base. After a landmark trip to the NFC Championship game, the franchise once again fell into despair. However, injuries played a significant role in the season’s setbacks. Jaden Daniels made just seven starts at QB, and receiver Terry McLaurin also spent a lot of time on the sideline. The off-season can’t come soon enough.
Although, for Marcus Mariota, the last few weeks are an opportunity to impress executives and coaches before NFL free agency begins in March. But first he has to get well.
