Mark Cuban’s “Palace Coup” began with Cooper Flagg
With everything Dallas Mavericks rumorsthe spotlight was on owner Patrick Dumont to see how he took the franchise forward after firing the general manager Nico Harrison. As it is the Mavericks rumors will continueone interesting aspect involves the former owner Mark Cubanwho was involved in discussions around the team.
In the latest op-ed from ESPN’s Tim McMahon, he goes into detail about how Cuban was involved, saying he was trying to “monthly coup in the palace”. To begin with, it was right after the shocking trade of Luka Doncic and Dallas received the No. 1 overall pick, selecting the star Cooper FlaggCuban “push to fure Harrison accelerated”.
“The dynamic between Dumont and Cuban never became contentious, sources on both sides said,” McMahon wrote. “They had known each other for years, forming a friendship that served as the basis of negotiations to sell the franchise. Those same sources say Cuban built his credibility with Dumont by criticizing Harrison’s lineup over the summer, which quickly proved painfully accurate.”
Mavericks’ Mark Cuban as “consultant”

After that, like Cuban’s role with the Mavericks has intrigued many fans of late, it doesn’t seem far off that he was in the inner circle of decision makers, while warning Dumont how bad the offense could be this season. Those warnings have come true this season, and Dallas has been second to last in offense.
Another note McMahon made was that Cuban “strongly suggested” that Dennis Lindsay, currently with the Detroit Pistons, succeed Harrison. Still, Dumont hears Cuban’s voice as team sources told MacMahon of his role, albeit one of “consultancy, not decision-making.”
“He’s walking around on the air right now,” one team source told ESPN. “Cuban floats in his Skechers.”
“He’s a consultant, not a decision maker,” another source told ESPN. “But he’s at the table.”
It remains to be seen how Cuban will think with the Mavericks now 4-11 as the team next faces the New York Knicks on Wednesday night.
