Mavericks fans debate Anthony Davis’ weight after practice photos

Anthony Davis is only ten months old in his Dallas Mavericks mandate, and the conversation around it continues to extend far beyond what is happening on the ground. New practice photos of Davis circulating on social media this week sparked a wave of debate among Mavericks fans, many of whom focused on his noticeably bulked-up frame compared to his leaner years in Los Angeles.

Davis, who arrived in Dallas last February in a blockbuster trade that reshaped the Western Conference, entered training camp at roughly 268 pounds, about 15 pounds heavier than his playing weight with the Lakers.

The All-Star forward has publicly stated that the weight gain was intentional, designed to improve endurance after years of battling lower-body injuries.

Some Mavericks fans applauded the move, pointing to Davis’ bruising presence on the interior early in the season. Through five games he achieved an average 20.8 points10.2 rebounds and 1.2 blocks, shooting 52.0% from the field for a team that is currently 3-8.

Even as Dallas struggles to find its rhythm on offense, Davis has remained one of their most consistent two-way anchors.

But the photos that have recently surfaced have sparked a different wave of comments online. Fans joked that the Texas barbecue became his “personal trainer,” while others questioned whether the extra weight could slow him down during an 82-game season.

Some supporters were quick to jump to his defense, arguing that his improved strength and ability to absorb contact in the paint was already evident in his game.

“People said he was too skinny to hit the post. Now they say he gained too much,” one Mavericks fan posted. “Let the man adjust and hook.”

Internally, the Mavericks seem unconcerned. Team staff reiterated that the weight gain was deliberate, closely monitored and directly related Davis’ goal to maintain accessibility. As Dallas works to stabilize the season and find consistency in the lineup, the organization sees Davis as one of the few safeties on the roster.

For now, the debate continues, but as always in the NBA, a win has a way of settling everything.

If the Mavericks start putting wins together, no one will be talking about scale anymore.
