Mavs’ Daniel Gafford among 3 centers the Dubs are targeting before the trade deadline

Like all other teams, Golden State Warriors are considering their trade options. But they really excel at grabbing the big man.

According to Chris Haynes of NBA TV, Daniel Gafford, Nic Clactonand Robert Williams III are on the short list.

“The Warriors are buyers … they’re looking for size and athleticism … the target list is Daniel Gafford, Nick Claxton and Robert Williams.”

Meanwhile, ClutchPoint’s Brett Siegel reported that the Warriors’ interest in all three was reported last year.

Siegel reported that Clacton was raised in context from the Warriors trading Jonathan Cummings.

“One name that has come up in discussions around the league as a potential target for the Warriors is Brooklyn Nets center Nick Claxton. However, there was a rejection of such a scenario involving Cummings, as the Nets could have pursued the young forward at any point during the summer while he was a restricted free agent. It doesn’t appear that Brooklyn has any interest in Cummings.”

Meanwhile, Gafford it was mentioned as part of the three-way trade with Dallas Mavericks and the Chicago Bulls. The idea would be for the Warriors to receive Gafford, Ayo Dosunmu and Chicago’s second round pick. Kuminga, center Trace Jackson-Davis and Dallas’ two second-round picks are headed to Chicago.

Then the Mavericks would get Kobe White. Also, Williams’ name was mentioned among potential frontcourt options, per Siegel.

Why are the Warriors looking for a center?

Golden State is currently 13-15. They also have an aging roster consisting of Steph Curry and Draymond Green.

However, they lack size, bounce and edge protection. In Steve Kerr’s system, the traditional big man in the paint doesn’t tremble. They need someone who can run the floor, provide spacing and is athletic.

Also, they’re looking for a guy who can shoot the three-pointer, like Claxton can.
