Mets target Freddy Peralta trade, what about other options?

The New York Mets have shaken up their roster in a big way heading into the 2026 season, who recently signed infielder Bo Bichette. Still, the Mets aren’t done making major adjustments this offseason.
New York is still looking for help for their pitching rotation. One of their own the crown jewels would be a replacement for Milwaukee Brewers starter Freddy Peralta. But if that doesn’t materialize, the Mets they have their eye on some free agent optionsvia Will Sammon of The Athletic.
“The Mets are still expected to look for pitching help,” Sammon wrote. “The Mets may be a little more likely to trade for a starter than sign in free agency, league sources said. The Mets remain in contact with the Milwaukee Brewers about Fredy Peralta, who is slated to be a free agent after the season.”
“If New York can’t get a deal done for Peralta or anyone else on the market, they could explore middle-of-the-pack free agents like the former Mets.” Chris Bassitt and Jose Quintana“The best free agent available is Framber Valdez.”
Although Peralta is a free agent after the season, it’s clear why he was such a hot target on the market. He is coming off his second All-Star appearance after posting a 2.70 ERA and a 204/66 K/BB ratio.
However, the Mets won’t be the only team on Peralta, and the Brewers could decide to keep him. In that case, Basit and Quintana come to the scene. Both have played for New York in the past.
During the 2025 campaign, Basitt held a 3.96 ERA and 166/52 K/BB ratio with the Toronto Blue Jays. Quintana posted a 3.96 ERA and 89/50 K/BB ratio over 24 starts with the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Mets will have plenty of options when it comes to improving their pitching staff. Maybe they threw a big party for Framber Valdez. But for now, New York is focusing on Peralta while looking at Basito and Quintana as backup plans.
