Miami makes franchise history with a dominant 1st quarter against the Hornets


Miami The Heat made franchise history during the first quarter Friday night NBA Cup match against the Charlotte Hornets.

Coming into the contest, Miami was without its key stars in Bam Adebayo and Tyler Hero due to injury. The team had a 4-4 record before Friday, showing just how competitive they have been to start the year.

Taking on the Hornets in search of momentum, the Heat didn’t let the opportunity to get off to a hot start slip away. It was in the first quarter when they had an incredible outing in the first 12 minutes of regulation, scoring 53 points in that span.

Their efforts allowed them to make franchise history. The 53 points they scored set a new record for most points scored in any quarter.

How the Heat played against the Hornets

The Heat’s historic quarter was not lost as they defeated the Hornets 126-108 in the NBA Cup game.

Charlotte kept up with Miami despite giving up 53 points in the first quarter. They fought back with a score of 36-19 in the second period to trail only 72-69 at halftime. Despite the Hornets’ efforts to mount a rally, the Heat outscored them 32-20 in the fourth quarter to secure the home win.

Shot selection and turnovers made the difference in this match. The Heat dominated in both areas by making 51.5% of their total shot attempts and limiting their turnovers to just eight. It was the opposite for the Hornets, who made just 38.1% of their shots overall with 18 turnovers.

Six players scored in double figures for Miami. Norman Powell led the way with 25 points, four rebounds and three assists. He shot 10 of 20 from the field, including 2 of 5 from beyond the arc and 3 of 3 from the free throw line. It’s Andrew Wiggins’ turn with 22 points and four rebounds, Pele Larsson had 19 points and four rebounds, while Jaime Jacques Jr. had 18 points and nine assists. Meanwhile, Simone Fontecchio scored 11 and Nikola Jovic scored 10 points.

The Heat will look forward to their next match, staying at home. They host the Portland Trail Blazers on November 8th at 8pm ET.
