Michael Malone reveals his feelings on his return as a coach

Since Michael Malone has been fired as head coach of the Denver Nuggets last season, he has yet to appear in any NBA coaching capacity. Doc Malone has been mentioned as a potential candidate for the New York Knicks‘ The once vacant head coach position, nothing really materialized there. During an ‘Inside The NBA’ segment ahead of Thursday’s game schedule, Malone revealed his true feelings about a potential return to training.
“To me, you are a competitor, I like to build something, to prepare, to be organized, but the most important thing that I miss is to be a part of something much bigger than myself,” Malone said. “Being in that locker room with the players, being with the coaching staff, celebrating a big win… I miss being part of that team camaraderie, that locker room atmosphere, and I’m looking forward to getting back to that.”
“I’m definitely not done coaching,” Malone continued. “Coaching is in my blood, I got that from my dad, and I’m excited to be back coaching on those sidelines and teaching.”
Should any coaching opportunities become available in the season or at the end of the season, Michael Malone will likely emerge as a legitimate candidate for any opening. Malone led the Denver Nuggets to their first NBA Championship in 2022-23.
Malone got his first NBA coaching job as an assistant with the Knicks back in 2001. He was an assistant coach in the NBA until 2013 with the Cleveland Cavaliers, New Orleans Pelicans and Golden State Warriors. His first coaching job came with the Sacramento Kings ahead of the 2013-14 season. Malone was fired midway through his second season with the Kings.
The Nuggets then hired Malone as their head coach for the 2015-16 season. He spent nine full seasons as the head coach of the Nuggets from 2015-2024 before being fired during the 2024-25 season. During his time with the Nuggets, the team made six playoff appearances in nine years.
