Michael Porter Jr. claims the Nets encouraged him to avoid sensitive topics

The The Brooklyn Nets have have gotten off to a terrible start to the 2025-26 NBA season, currently 2-11 heading into Tuesday night’s home game against the Boston Celtics. Michael Porter Jr. is one of the lone veterans on this Nets team, and while he’s managed to put up some solid stats so far this year, that hasn’t stopped fans from starting their 2026 mock draft simulators.
Over the summer, Porter Jr. made headlines several times for his tendency to speak whatever was on his mind during podcast appearances and other interviews, and most recently he talked about how the Nets reacted to it during an appearance on Ball in the Family.
“I wanted to be done. I was done going on other people’s podcasts because mostly I was asking questions and I could let them talk crazy things and I could relax,” Porter Jr. said.
“Even with the organization, we just had conversations that they would appreciate it if I stayed away from certain topics. That’s why it’s a VNBA thing, it’s just a topic that’s so sensitive today, so I try to be aware of that. I’ll retire for you or for Melo. But mostly I don’t try to say anything more, I’m alone,” he added.
The WNBA was indeed one of the topics that Porter Jr. raised eyebrows for his opinion this summer. He also spoke about the gambling scandal surrounding his brother, former Toronto Raptors great Johntay Porter, as well as his affinity for controversial social media influencer Andrew Tate.
Either way, the Nets will next take the floor on Tuesday night when they host the Boston Celtics at 7:30 PM ET from Brooklyn.
