Michael Porter Jr. needs to get used to a bigger suit
Expected: Michael Porter Jr will have more ammunition and offensive responsibilities in Brooklyn. This is confirmed as the former Denver scorer is averaging 23.1 points since the start of the season, which is his career best. “We see his progress and we need him to continue to improve”, claims Jordi Fernandez.
The trend will even increase in the coming weeks as Cam Thomas is injured and will miss at least the rest of November. The 2023 champion will thus be the undisputed leader of the Nets offense.
That goes with more turnovers as with 46% shooting success and 34% on 3-pointers, he’s never been as clumsy (except in the shortened 2021/22 season), and the winger is averaging 2.4 turnovers, again his record.
“It’s a challenge. The intensity with which he plays is different. Before, the context was different, neither better nor worse,” notes his coach. “He’s touching the ball more, his turnovers are increasing, so he has to correct that. I like his 3-point attempts because he draws attention and gives space to his teammates. I want him to shoot because he’s going to put it in. He’s one of the best shooters in the world.”
Forced to grow faster
For Michael Porter Jr., the good news comes with the bad, and as the suit gets bigger, you have to adjust. “You don’t become a leader and a veteran overnight. He’s being asked to be an adult in this group. We’re forcing him to grow faster.”adds Jordi Fernandez.
Cam Thomas has missed the last two games (playing just five minutes in the first), and his teammate has stepped up with a 30-point average. A sign of the performances that will be performed during the month of November?
“I will push myself to take on more responsibility than in the past”he announced last week. “I’ve always been someone who can adjust. As the season goes on, it’s going to be easier for me to find good shots against big defenders. It’s going to be a process.”
