Mick Cronin tears up the Big Ten for a brutal schedule

The UCLA Bruins delivered their highlights season win on Tuesday nightknocking off No. 4 Purdue 69-67 at Pauley Pavilion, but the aftermath quickly turned from celebration to criticism.

Bruins coach Mick Cronin took the moment to vent his frustration with the Big Ten, arguing that UCLA was put at a disadvantage long before tipoff. After the game, Cronin pointed directly to the conference’s scheduling decisions, offering a rough estimate in his comments after the game.

“I want to thank the Big Ten for giving us five of our first seven on the road,” Coach Cronin said, via The Field of 68. “But we don’t go back to LA until Saturday and give us a team picked to win the league on two days’ rest after five of our first seven on the road. I really want to thank the Big Ten for that.”

Cronin explained that even fellow coaches reached out, questioning why UCLA was forced to make such a turnover after a full stretch of the road, underscoring his belief that the Bruins were dealt an uncharacteristically tough early layoff.

“It can’t get much worse. I don’t think they care about basketball. That’s just my opinion,” Cronin added. “They’re not moving the city of Los Angeles. I don’t want them. I’m damn sure not moving UCLA…But you don’t have to play five in the first seven on the road and then come home and pick a team to win the league on two days’ rest. I had two old coaching friends text me, why did you play Purdue State on Saturday?

Purdue looked poised to escape Los Angeles with a win after Trey Kaufman-Wren’s jumper gave the Boilermakers a 67-61 lead with 1:56 left. Instead, UCLA turned the game around dramatically. and, Tyler Bilodeau delivered the decisive moment โ€” a quiet three-pointer in the final seconds.

Purdue got one last look, but CJ Coke’s buzzer-beating attempt fell short, sealing the upset and handing the Boilermakers their first Big Ten loss of the season. Dent was the engine all night, outplaying one of the best backcourts in the country. The senior guard broke down Purdue’s defense on multiple occasions by getting into the paint.

For UCLA, the win was more than a win โ€” it was a statement. As Cronin’s comments made clear, the Bruins believe the road ahead won’t get any easier. But if this performance is any indication, UCLA may be finding its edge just in time for the heart of Big Ten play.
