Following the firing of head coach Jerrod Mayothe New England Patriots and former head coach of the Tennessee Titans Mike Vrabel were a a matchup that many believe would be a good matchup. After interviewing Vrabel for the opening, it seems the two are is approaching a possible agreementaccording to Jordan Schultz on Ks.
“Sources: The #Patriots and Mike Vrabel have negotiated a deal to make him the franchise’s next head coach, and barring something unforeseen, the expectation remains that both sides will reach an agreement,” Schultz wrote. “(@nicoleciang of the @BostonGlobe was also on this story.)”
Like Mayo, Vrabel is a former Patriots player who played eight seasons as a linebacker with the franchise. Although May’s time with the team did not produce positive results, The Patriots want to bring in another former player as their head coach in 2025.
Vrabel was a key contributor at quarterback for the Patriots from 2001 to 2008. Although he didn’t win many individual awards, Vrabel earned a Pro Bowl invitation and All-Pro honors in 2007. However, the potential new coach was a member of three Super Bowl rosters, he won in 2001, 2003 and in 2004

After his playing career, Vrabel was hired as the head coach of the Titans in 2018, leading them for six consecutive seasons. In 2023 Vrabel was fired after a 6-11 record, which led him to become a Cleveland Browns defensive consultant in 2024.
Now, together with Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnsonthe Patriots seem to have their own preferences on who they want to take over the franchise in 2025.
And after Mayo’s quick tenure with the Patriots, they don’t seem worried about hiring another former player. To Vrabel’s credit, he’s also been a head coach in the NFL, which makes him a more intriguing option than Mayo before Robert Kraft hired him.
But, without pen hitting paper on the dotted line, the Patriots’ head coaching position remains unfilled.
