Mina Kimes reveals how action games can unlock AJ Brown

After turning a sweep of the New York Giants in Week 8the Philadelphia Eagles they have a week off to talk about their successes, their failures, and really set the tone for the second half of the season, which should almost certainly feature more play under center.

Forced to watch due to an injury to starting center Kam Jurgens, putting Hurts under center really unlocked the Eagles’ offense, forcing opposing teams to respect Saquon Barkley as a runner while providing more interesting options downfield in the passing game.

A discussion of play-action’s place in the Eagles’ offense at NFL liveESPN’s Mina Kime noted that this new wrinkle could do wonders for AJ Brownwho was the dominant play-action for the Titans when he was catching passes by Ryan Tannehill.

“They’re going to continue to live in this play-action world under center and expand it, which I think we both agree is a good idea. They’ve got to find a way to activate AJ Brown. Yeah, come back in 2019, 2020, 2021,” Kimes explained.

“How many times did we watch Ryan Tannehill in Tennessee? Yeah, under center, fake a handoff and then just throw a rocket to AJ Brown. The switch, the deep digs, the posts. Over that period of time. He led all NFL receivers in passing routes in the game. That’s such a big part of his skill set. And, honestly, Phil brought something to that. And again, if he’s going to get into the game more, I think he’s here so much potential for the game, I don’t know, but I think it will do more.

With Brown’s trade rumors rearing their ugly heads again in 2025 after some performances where he didn’t do much on the roster, some fans openly questioned whether the Eagles cut the star wide receiver in Week 8 to avoid a potential injury before the trade deadline. While that could happen, it’s more likely that the Browns will finish the season in Philly, with Kimes’ idea as a potential way for Nick Sirianni and company to keep him happy and their offense at its highest level.
