Mychal Bridges, role model for Mike Brown’s Knicks

Since arriving in New York, Mike Brown has wanted to build a team who plays a fast game, which is contrary to the philosophy advocated by Tom Thibodeau who opted for a rather slow, half-court style of play.

To speed up the Knicks’ game, the former Kings coach wants the ball to circulate more and be less isolated, which could logically lead to more turnovers. However, if that happens, Mike Brown wants to see his players quickly get back on defense because that’s what he does so well Mikal Bridges.

“When there’s a turnover, he doesn’t hesitate to go straight away from the ball. The way he goes from attack to defense is incredible, certainly one of the best I’ve ever seen.” Mike Brown’s remark. “I hope everybody sees these little things that don’t show up on the stat sheet, but I hope they don’t go unnoticed.”

A pillar in Mike Brown’s system

Being able to switch quickly from offense to defense will be a key quality for this version of Mike Brown’s Knicks, and right now, not everything is in place. After the success against the Hornets Michal Bridges noticed last Friday that some of his teammates had their heads down after a missed shot or turnover, which led to some easy Charlotte baskets.

“We’re working harder on this,” recognizes the Nix winger. “He really helps me forget the last play, so I bounce back (on defense) quickly and he makes the whole team do the same. He encourages us every day, but also puts pressure on us to bounce back quickly every time.”

If Mikal Bridges is an example of a quick return to defense, Mike Brown’s game system could offer him more opportunities on offense. A few days agothe Knicks coach has already confided that former Suns and Nets winger could use his aggressiveness on the defensive end to deflect passes or get steals and thus have easy baskets in transition.

In a set attack, with the ball circulating more, the opposing defense will be unbalanced, which could allow the winger to attack the circle more easily or find more mid-range shots.
