NBPA releases statement in support of VNBA CBA uncertainty

Friday marked an important date for the VNBA and the players’ union as it was the deadline for both sides to agree on a new CBA. That didn’t happen with both sides still far apart in the CBA negotiations, and both sides The VNBA and the players have agreed to extend the deadline another 30 days to avoid the blockade. As the deadline approached, several other players’ unions released statements in solidarity with the WNBPA, including the NBPA.
In a published short statement on social media, the NBPA joined the NFLPA, MLBPA and MLSPA this week in standing alone with the VNBA players’ union amid ongoing CBA negotiations.
“We stand with the women of the VNBPA as they work toward a collective bargaining agreement that reflects their value and influence both on and off the court,” the NBPA said in a statement. The NBPA also released a picture confirming their lonesome with the VNBA players.
The WNBA reached a period of record popularity, with Game 1 of the WNBA Finals breaks viewership records. Even a WNBA semifinal series in between Las Vegas Aces and Indiana Fever, despite Kaitlin Clarke sitting out with an injury, were the most-watched semifinal series in WNBA playoff history.
But during the playoffs, tensions between the league and its players boiled over with Minnesota Link star and WNBPA vice president Napheesa Collier criticizes the league and Commissioner Kathy Engelbert for multiple complaints. Collier’s statement drew support from players around the league.
At the forefront of the CBA negotiations is the issue of revenue sharing. There are many misconceptions and misinformation circulating in the world of social media, but WNBA players have always been clear about what they expect in terms of potential income and salary sharing.
If the players and the league do not reach an agreement on a new CBA, the next step would be a lockout.
