NI waives former Hawks scorer

The New York The Knicks waive Garrison Matthewsaccording to SNI’s Ian Begley. Matthews played in the Knicks’ first four preseason games but it didn’t in Friday night’s win over the Charlotte Hornets.

New head coach Mike Brown told reporters after the game that he “came in wanting to play 10 guys.” Brown added that he “played guys (that) he just wanted to watch,” such as rookie Mohamed Diawara, who started.

Matthews was one of three veterans the team signed ahead of training camp, along with Landry Shamet and Malcolm Brogdon. New York had one roster spot, but both Shamet and Brogdon were expected to pass.

The team will have to trade or waive two players to make room for both veterans. Matthews was expected to be dropped as an unfortunate casualty of roster restrictions. The team wanted to make a deal with one of their younger players to open up another spot. Complications arose when the market for players It turned out that the Knicks preferred to move.

Those circumstances changed drastically when Brogdon announced his retirement on Wednesday. New York left just one player over the cap before Saturday’s non-guaranteed waiver deadline. They will be at the limit, but not over it, after Matthews announced his departure.

The sharpshooter made 59% of his 3-point attempts from the corner last season while playing for the Atlanta Hawks. Matthews, 28, has shown he can fill a role on an NBA roster.

It seems Matthews will be waiting for just that opportunity. He said that recently there was “no way” from him committed to the G-League’s pending roster, according to Stefan Bondi of The Post.

The Knicks still have time to trade before the 2025-26 season. Brogdon’s unexpected retirement, however, cut the number of tough decisions they had to make in half. Matthews was a difficult part, according to Bagley, but a necessary one.
