Nick Claxton returns from a two-game layoff following a sudden ankle injury

Brooklyn Nets center Nic ClactonA sudden ankle injury won’t sideline him for long. Claxton missed the team’s last two games with an ankle injury during practice on Wednesday. However, he is available to return during Sunday’s match with Atlanta Hawks.

Brooklyn is in dire need of frontcourt reinforcements after losses to the Cleveland Cavaliers and Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Nets’ offense sputtered during his first appearances outside of the All-Star break. Jordi Fernandez’s team averaged 85.0 points on 35.5 percent shooting from the field and 23.3 percent from three with 16.5 turnovers per game in the pair of losses.

With Clacton, Dai’Ron Sharpe was Brooklyn’s only available center. Rookie first-round pick Danny Wolf, who spent most of the season on the wing, filled minutes at backup center.

Clacton should provide a significant attack in attack upon return. The veteran big man put together the most productive offensive season of his career, averaging 12.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists on 59.0 percent shooting in 50 appearances.

Wins in the upcoming matchups against the Hawks and Dallas Mavericks would undo some of the recent progress Brooklyn has made in the tank race. The Nets moved into third place in the lottery standings after losing three straight. They are one game behind the Indiana Pacers for second.

Ziaire Williams will be ruled out of Brooklyn for personal reasons on Sunday. Atlanta will be without Jonathan Cumminga due to a bruised left knee.

The Hawks have lost four of their last five games, including Friday’s 128-97 loss to the Miami Heat.
