Nikola Jokić almost took Domantas Sabonis’ head off with an assist

Denver Nuggets superstar big man Nikola Jokic can be quite unfair on the court for opposing teams. Despite his complete lack of athleticism and speed, Jokic makes up for it with many other great things he does with the basketball — perhaps none better than his ability to find teammates.
Jokic’s passing ability has become legendary in the NBA. Given his size and the position he plays, he shouldn’t dribble the ball as well as he does almost every night.
On Monday night, Jokic showed his extraordinary playmaking skills during an incredible moment in the first quarter. Denver’s home game against the visiting Sacramento Kings.
After taking a pass from guard Jamal Murray at the top of the 3-point line, the three-time NBA Most Valuable Player immediately — and carelessly — took the pass and made a layup Aaron Gordonwho went backdoor after catching Kings guard and former Nugget Russell Westbrook napping on defense. Gordon then went up and threw down a two-handed dunk to extend Denver’s lead to seven points at that point.
But the most impressive part of the series the ball barely grazed Sabonis’ hair before falling into Gordon’s hands.

When the game was all said and done, Jokic and the Nuggets picked up their fourth win of the season with a 130-124 victory over the Kings.
As usual, Jokic led his team, which in 36 minutes of work finished with 34 points on 14-for-22 shooting with four three-pointers, 14 assists, seven rebounds, four steals, two blocks and only a turnover.
Westbrook paced the Kings with 26 points, 12 assists and six assists in 37 minutes while shooting 10-for-17 from the floor, but had six turnovers and was minus-5 overall.
The 2025-26 NBA season has just begun, so fans can expect a lot more basketball magic from Jokic, who is now in his 11th season in the league.
Looking ahead, the Nuggets will host the Miami Heat next Thursday in Denver’s second of a four-game stretch.
