Nikola Jokic is already giving horse advice at NBA All-Star Weekend

Denver Nuggets a cornerstone and a proud Serbian Nikola Jokić is deeply passionate about horses and horse racing, but he’s not the most animated individual when speaking on camera. That dichotomy between his personal and public life was on display during a media session at NBA All-Star Weekend.

When asked by the (apparently) young Texan what kind of “horse” he should get, Jokić offered a fairly general but honest explanation.

“Best, that’s a great idea,” replied the 2023 NBA Finals MVP and three-time regular season MVP, according to the “Oh, no, not X” account. “But I don’t know which one is the best… the most expensive probably, that will be the best (laughs).”

Jokic is probably peppered with horse questions all year long, because it’s one of the things people really know about the man outside of his superior basketball talents, love for the music of the native land and the fact that he was written during a Taco Bell commercial. The five-time All-NBA first-team selection likely has plenty of horse knowledge to share, but perhaps this wasn’t the right time or place for him to speak at length about the most desirable breeds.

Still, this answer will add credence to the idea that Jokic is one of the most nonchalant superstars in recent memory. He’s certainly not the only outstanding player who exudes a reserved personality – San Antonio Spurs legend Tim Duncan comes to mind – but there’s a growing belief that the 30-year-old center doesn’t like the spotlight. A column about his supposedly a short exchange with the Serbian folklore group after last Saturday’s victory against the Chicago Bulls only raises the curiosity of the fans.

Nobody knows what to expect when Nikola Jokić is in public, because he is a real enigma. However, there is little mystery as to what will happen on the pitch. The sensational big man is averaging a triple-double for the second straight season, leading the league with 12.3 rebounds and 10.7 assists per game and ranking in the top 10 with 28.7 points per game. He probably would have been the MVP favorite if he hadn’t missed 16 games with a knee injury.

Jokić is a hoops expert and an enthusiastic horse owner. Those sides of him are separate, but they obviously resonate equally with the public. He will start at NBA All-Star Game sixth straight, and then turn his attention to the second half of the 2025-26 campaign before returning to his prized stable once his Nuggets business is done for the summer.
