Norman Powell blames himself for tough loss to Magic

After that The Miami Heat’s loss to the Dallas Mavericks last Wednesdaythe team was looking to get back into the win column Friday night against the Orlando Magic. Although Heat star Tyler Hero would miss the game with a toe injury, the team would end up losing 106-105, with fans pointing to the final possession as a missed opportunity, one that Norman Powell blame yourself for.

There are 3.7 seconds left in the gameMiami had a one-point chance to win the game as the inbounds pass went to the Bam Adebayobut as he set up to get a good look, Powell would initiate a play-disrupting turn action. This led to two defenders entering Adebayo’s space, delivering a highly contested shot that ended in defeat as the big man’s frustration was palpable.

Finishing with 28 points, Powell would blame that sequence on himself, saying that he “pushed” Adebayo is out of place with a chance to win.

“It was kind of messed up because it pushed Bam off his spot,” Powell said, via video from HeatCulture on X, formerly Twitter. “And so I was still trying to bend and cut to the ball. And then there was 3.7 seconds on the clock, and I’m continuing, trying to go to the ball, and I kind of ran into Bam’s space. I think he thought, like, plays broken … it was just a little messed up on the last play. And I feel like in plays he had to lose. some space to work with.”

With The Heat is one of the best teams in the league and fast-paced teams, it was another game where the team slowed down and played more out of the mud, although they still had a chance to win. Adebayo would blame that last game “miscommunication.”

“Usually the last set is like, in that situation — Norm hasn’t been here long enough — it’s usually my iso play to get the bucket,” said Adebayo, who finished with 24 points and 15 rebounds. “So, just a miscommunication on the last play.”

For Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra, he would say how “those things happen”, which to Adebayo’s point could be a byproduct of Powell still being new to the team.

“Just the play calling that we had, if you have a little bit of time left, you can run some other triggers for it, but when Bam got to half court, I think that dictated that no other actions were available for three seconds,” Spoelstra said, via Heat Central video on X. “Norma zigged, while Bam skated, we’ll sort it all out.”

The Heat look to snap a two-game skid with a game against the Sacramento Kings on Saturday night, the second contest of the current back-to-back.
