Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman has not been charged after allegations of misconduct

St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office will not file a lawsuit against Notre Dame football head coach Marcus Freemanaccording to VSBT 22’s Bennett Wise An assistant wrestling coach at a local high school has accused a 40-year-old man of molestation at a wrestling tournament. The university stood behind Freeman from the jump and can now move forward knowing that its most prominent leader will not face legal consequences for the alleged exchange.

The incident is said to have occurred near the exit door of the Mishawaka High School gymnasium. The complainant, three-time All-American wrestler Chris Flieger, told police that Freeman “pushed him with two hands.” After investigating the claim, the prosecution does not wish to proceed further.

“Based on a review of all the evidence, the state could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a crime took place,” the official statement said. “While the evidence suggests touching may have occurred, unintentional touching is not sufficient. The State therefore declines to pursue any criminal charges.”

Freeman, who was in attendance to see his son compete, can now turn his attention to recruiting players. His 2025 ended on a rough note after the Fighting Irish were left out of the 12-team College Football Playoff, and his 2026 didn’t start much better. Now, however, the five-year-old HC is hoping to build momentum again.

Marcus Freeman would probably be one of the most sought after candidates NFL coaching cycle if he decided to leave South Bend, but the former Ohio State running back is seemingly determined to get the program back into contention for a national title. Legal charges could have hindered that ultimate pursuit. He will move forward and try to keep his focus on Notre Dame football.
