Paolo Bancher and Jamal Mosley’s frustrations go viral after loss

The Orlando Magic fell to 4-6 and 11th in the Eastern Conference with a 111-107 home loss to the Boston Celtics on Nov. 9. The defeat left the head coach Jamahl Mosley and star forward Paolo Banchero visibly frustrated, and their remarks after the game quickly went viral on social media. The slow start raised questions about the team’s chemistry after their offseason addition of Desmond Bain.

When asked about his rotation decisions in the conference call after the game, Mosley interrupt the question completely.

“Seventeen turnovers for 29 points. Never mind the rotation. Thanks,” Mosley said.

His blunt response pointed directly to the careless play that cost Orlando down the stretch. The Magic committed 17 turnovers that Boston turned into 29 points, a four-point game difference.

The exchange drew attention for how unusual it was. Mosley usually remains composed at press conferences, while Banchero rarely gives such short answers. The tone indicated deeper frustration as the 4-6 start played out.

Orlando led 85-83 early in the fourth quarter, but could not close. Derrick White hit a 3-pointer with 45 seconds left and Jordan Walsh added another 3-pointer with 13 seconds left to seal the win for Boston.

Banchero finished with 28 points on 9-of-16 shooting and made all 10 free throws. The show offered a glimpse of what he can deliver, although the team struggled early in the season.

Franz Wagner added 20 points and Jalen Suggs also scored 20 to keep the Magic competitive. But the team shot just 7 of 30 from three-point range, continuing a troubling trend.

The Magic are averaging 34 percent from deep, which ranks near the bottom of the league. That lack of spacing made it difficult to attack and put more pressure on Buncher to create in tight spaces.

The turnovers and shooting struggles have combined to drop Orlando’s offensive rating to 114.3, via Statmuse, which ranks 21st in the league. Their defense also dropped to 15th after finishing in the top five last season, leaving little room for error on nights when the shots aren’t falling.

Orlando will look to bounce back when they host the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night.
