Pat Kelsey calls Duke loss a ‘kick in the ass’

Louisville Cardinals head coach Pat Kelsey offered no sugar coating following his team’s brutal loss to the Duke Blue Devils, delivering one of his most bleak postgame evaluations since taking over the program.
Cardinals trip to Cameron Indoor Stadium, should serve as an opportunity for revengeinstead it turned into a humbling night that exposed every weakness Louisville basketball brought with him. After an 83-52 loss, Kelsey he did not mince words addressing the media, repeatedly emphasizing how lopsided the game was.
“They got us in the butt. That’s about the extent of my statement,” Kelsey said. “There’s not much to say except that it was a butt shot. By every metric you’d look at, it’s about kicking butt; that’s what the stat sheet says. They shot 47 percent; they were plus-21 on the board. They were the aggressor. They imposed their will at the basket, we were in the box, I think we were down five-to-2. All we can do is shake ourselves up, get back to work and use this as something that helps us become better.

Louisville entered the rematch hoping to respond after a Jan. 6 loss at home, but Duke quickly flipped the script. What started as a competitive first half unraveled late, as the Blue Devils closed the opening period with a determined run and never looked back.
Duke’s physicality, rebounding dominance and efficiency inside overwhelmed a Louisville team that struggled to find any offensive rhythm. Frustration boiled over during the second half when Kelsey was visibly upset with forward Sananda Frew after missed rebound opportunities led directly to a Duke three-pointer, pushing the margin further out of reach. That moment captured the theme of the night — Louisville just couldn’t match Duke’s intensity or execution.
Statistically, the gap was obvious. Louisville’s shooting percentage was very low from the field, including just five shots from inside the arc, while Duke controlled the paint, dominated the glass, and put four players in double figures. Cameron Boozer led the way with a double-double, highlighting Duke’s control at both ends.
Despite the embarrassment, Kelsey described the loss as a learning moment rather than a turning point. Louisville now returns home with a chance to reset, refocus and respond in ACC play.
