Philip Rivers will be ‘hanging around’ in week 18

One of the craziest stories of the late NFL season was Indianapolis Colts signing quarterback Philip Riversfive years after he retired following his last appearance with the team during the 2020 season. The move comes amid The Colts’ injury crisis at quarterback and their freefall in the AFC standings in the second half of the 2025 NFL season, and while Rivers was unable to get the team back into the win column, he inspired seniors everywhere to never give up on their dreams.
Rivers will not be in the lineup for the Colts in the season finale against the Houston Texans, but that doesn’t mean his time with the team is completely over, according to the latest reports.
“Shane Steichen confirms Riley Leonard will start Sunday. ‘Good chance’ Seth Hennigan will be backup. Philip Rivers will be hanging around the building this week to help. Anthony Richardson Sr. will not be activated. Still has limitations,” reported Kevin Bowen of The Fan Morning Show on X, formerly Twitter.
Rivers’ veteran experience and leadership will certainly be helpful for a younger player like Leonard, a 2025 rookie who has also struggled with injuries at times this year.
It may be hard to remember now, but the Colts were 7-1 at one point and atop the AFC standings, and some wonder if they could secure the number one overall pick in the conference. However, injuries and an overall decline in play have sent the Colts into a sharp free fall over the past few weeks, with the team having not won a game since an early November victory over the Atlanta Falcons.
Either way, the Colts and Texans are scheduled to finish their regular seasons against each other on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM ET from Houston.
