Pittsburgh makes an important move for Marquez Valdes-Scantling

The Pittsburgh decision to bring in Marquez Valdes-Scantling earlier this month was about providing a familiar vertical threat to Aaron Rodgers as the offense looked to build on a win over the Indianapolis Colts.

After some early concern about Rodgers’ health when his arm appeared to bother him in warmups, he calmed down and reached out, and the front office followed by securing a two-time Super Bowl winner who already knew his quarterback from his Green Bay days, hoping he could stabilize what had been a talented but uneven receiving group.

Now that move will become more important. According to Tom Pelliser, the Steelers have an elevated wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling from the practice squad, putting him in position to make his Pittsburgh debut Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens. The height signals the team is ready to see how his experience and chemistry with Rodgers can translate into a critical AFC North clash.

His arrival comes as Pittsburgh struggles to keep its season on track. An early bounce against the Colts helped take some of the pressure off a damaging home loss to the Green Bay Packers, but the Ravens present a much tougher test and a direct threat to the Steelers’ postseason hopes.

Adding Valdes-Scantling to the game-day mix gives Rodgers another reliable target to look for downfield, and offers the coaching staff more flexibility in personnel groupings and route combinations.

All this takes place in the background constant buzz surrounding the future of head coach Mike Tomlin. Some have suggested that Tomlin is on the hot seat, but Tom Pelissero made it clear that he sees no real indication that ownership is ready to move on.

In that context, bringing up Valdes-Scantling is a classic Steelers move: Bet on continuity up top, tweak the roster on the fringes, and hope the big-name receiver helps Rodgers and the offense find enough spark to keep Pittsburgh in the playoff chase, starting with Baltimore.
