player concession time?

In mid-February, the VNBA players’ union (VNBPA) formulated a proposal for a collective agreement that The VNBA refused. The Women’s League justified its decision by explaining that this proposal would result in a loss of $460 million.

So the players’ union formulated a new proposal, revising its ambitions downwards, as reported by ESPN. In the first offer, the players asked for 27.5% of the League’s gross revenue. Now they only ask for 26%. This reduction would represent a difference of about $100 million. However, the WNBPA is still seeking a salary cap hit of $9.5 million for the first year.

Another point of contention: the issue of housing. Since 1999, the VNBA has provided small apartments for players. In its draft collective bargaining agreement, the NBA’s little sister wants to limit this offer to only players who receive the minimum wage or have no WNBA experience. And this is where things get stuck. The players asked to be offered accommodation during the first years of the implementation of the new collective agreement. Then, the VNBA would no longer have to accommodate players who earn at least 80% of their maximum contract. In its latest proposal, the players’ union lowered this threshold to 75%.

Progress towards the next agreement?

If there are still differences on these two points, the players’ union and the VNBA are getting closer to an agreement on the places intended for players in development. New to the future collective bargaining agreement, these spots are intended to accommodate two additional players on each team, specifically to fill voids in the event of injury. A measure that would have served the Fever well last season as Indiana’s team was decimated by injuries including that of Caitlin Clark.

As far as this paper is concerned, the point of contention was the number of years of experience necessary to obtain one of these positions. The VNBA requires a maximum of four or five years depending on playing time, while the VNBPA originally wanted no limits. The players’ union has since revised its stance and wants to set a six-year limit.

So far, the VNBA has not responded to this new player proposal. However, the clock is ticking deadline is March 10 fast approaching. After this date, the VNBA calendar will be modified while it is has already been fixed by the Women’s Major League
