Portland hands the Thunder their first loss, but not before a bizarre ending

The Portland Trail Blazers he snapped Oklahoma City ThunderA perfect record as the defending champion in a 121-119 victory that went down to the wire at the Moda Center. Despite the injuries, the Blazers continued their impressive start with perhaps the best performance to date. Portland erased a 22-point deficit, but nearly coughed up an eight-point lead (112-104) with 2:48 remaining. The Thunder pulled within three with 6.5 seconds remaining.

Then Thunder guard Isaiah Joe tied the game three-point shooting foul on Toumani Kamara with 0.6 seconds left in the game. However, upon review by the officials, it was determined that Joe’s foot was on the three-point arc and not behind it, sending him to the free throw line for a two, not a three, which would have given Joe a chance to tie the game.

Instead, the Blazers improved to 5-3, sweeping the Thunder — the only undefeated team left this season. Danny Avdia was one assist away from a triple-double (26 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists) to lead three Blazers players with 20+ points, including Jrue Holiday (22 points, six rebounds) and Jeremy Grant (20 points), who led the bench for Portland.

Despite the absence of All-Stars Damian Lillard and Mathis Thiboul, The Trail Blazers’ hot start forced Draymond Green after a 139-119 loss during the first week of the regular season. It was enough for Green to say watch out for the overlooked Blazers, who now have the sixth best record in the competitive Western Conference.

Green talked about the Blazers dynamic core on the Draymond Green Show.

“Portland is a tough, tough game. They have a bunch of long, switchable guys. Defensively, they’re all 6’7, 6’8 can move their feet. They can guard positions one through five,” Green said. “The leadership of Jrue Holiday has proven to be invaluable to this team. They have centers, they have wings. They have young shooting wings that can get it. They have defenders, they have a true point guard in Jrue Holiday.

“That team is a young team that I don’t think a lot of people look at that I think will have a good year.”

The Blazers will take the next two days off before facing the Heat on Saturday.
