‘Probably has a great selfie’

At 5:02 of the fourth quarter at Barclays Center, Cavs star Donovan Mitchell went from angry to caught in a rush.

Before the Cavaliers could field the ball while bleeding a double-digit lead to Egor Demin and the surging Brooklyn Netsa fan in a purple hoodie sprinted to the floor and charged directly at the NBA All-Star point guard.

Mitchell took a step back, confused, as the person aggressively took pictures on his phone before being chased off the field by four security guards.

“Oh s***,” Mitchell said after the game about his initial reaction. “I took a few steps back and then I repositioned my feet and was ready to deal with whatever it took. The kid wanted a selfie. I know he’s probably in jail, but when he gets out he’ll probably have a great selfie. I’m sorry, I don’t think it’s a joke.”

It was a scary moment that didn’t really fit into the frame of attention that should be attracted, e.g Allen dunks every Nets player in his way.

“At first I was confused and I saw him running towards Don and took a step towards him,” Jarrett Allen added from his vantage point. “But we have great security at the Barclays Center. Shout out to them. They took care of it. When he came off the field, his feet didn’t touch the ground. They carried him out of the building.”

Hot on the heels of the Cavs allowing the Nets to cut a 20-point lead to one possession, Mitchell didn’t let the odd moment affect him.

“I can’t say it is, to be honest,” Mitchell said. “I was pretty bummed that we blew the lead. It was just like, ‘Okay, it happened’ and let’s move on. I was thinking there, and then I saw somebody running, so I didn’t have time to process it all. I’m glad they got it over with. Security got it over with.”

Atkinson said he didn’t see what happened: “I was kind of weird. You never see that in an NBA game. I think you see that in European football, don’t you? When a fan runs out there… bizarre. Bizarre.”
