‘Real chance’ Philip Rivers gets the position of head coach of Buffalo

The Buffalo Bills‘ the search for a head coach continued an unexpected and national twist on Fridayas a longtime NFL quarterback Philip Rivers appeared as a serious candidate for the competition.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Bills already are took a big step by bringing in Rivers for an interview, sparking league-wide intrigue over the direction of the franchise.
“From NFL Network Insider: Bills interviewed Philip Rivers for HC today … and there’s a good chance it could happen.” Rapoport updated the development on X, formerly Twitter.
The announcement was accompanied by a video in which Rapoport explains why the possibility is viewed as more than mere speculation. In his analysis, Rapoport emphasized that Rivers’ candidacy is being taken seriously in NFL circles.
“The chances that Philip Rivers could be the next coach of the Buffalo Bills are not zero. This is real,” he said, stressing that the Bills’ interest is genuine, not symbolic.
Rapoport also noted the emotional appeal of the situation, adding that it would be “absolutely spectacular” to see Rivers return to the NFL in a major leadership role. An NFL insider also provided the broader context surrounding Rivers’ unconventional recent pathpointing to his brief and surprising return to the field late in the season to help the Colts who were dealing with a KB crisis. That return, albeit short-lived, reignited the talks about Rivers’ football intellect and leadership qualities.
“And the slide that Philip Rivers has taken us on this year was something that no one could have predicted,” Rapoport explained, “My understanding is that teams started scouting Philip Rivers in late December or early January and the Buffalo Bills are the ones who took the step and brought him in for an interview.
Rivers, 44, has no NFL coaching experience, having spent his post-retirement years coaching high school football in Alabama, but what makes this attempt even more interesting and possible is the Bills’ play-caller.
“The relationship with Josh Allen is strong, that makes sense. But the Buffalo Bills are looking for a leader, someone to get this team going and get them over the hump, deep into the playoffs,” Rapoport added.
